A THRIFTING & VINTAGE LOVERS GOLD MINE IN LA

No matter what your style, taste, interests or desires may be, there is a place for you in LA!

One of the beautiful things about starting life in a brand new place, is that there is a genuine excitement, hunger and appreciation for just about everything, no matter how small. lol…  I found myself praying the other day, while driving, that I won’t ever lose the awe and amazement that I feel for the little things. Especially for all the different types of food, vintage, art, flowers and incredible mountain views every where.

That being said, I had to share this insane sidewalk sale that I came across in Hollywood while Discovering LA. The experience was quite hilarious, especially because I was a first timer to this weekly “EVENT”. The pic and sign aren’t deceiving your eyes, everything is really $1 on Sundays. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, turns out that there is a complete strategy necessary to acquiring these pieces. There are rules, there is a stand-off, a whistle, and swiftness is of the utmost importance. I’m laughing just thinking of how confused and lost I felt when it all began. I couldn’t believe that this was an actual thing. 😉

SO here goes the quick rundown.

There are about 20 plastic wrapped bails of clothes, lined up on the floor. No one can see what’s inside, BUT everyone there positioned themselves beside the one think will be a good one. Two men came outside and everyone had to step away from the bails and wait for the men to give the run down of the rules, yup rules. At a specific time every Sunday, the men walk through the bails and cut the straps and plastic off. At this point all the clothes spill out, everyone HAS TO STAY STILL, and you cannot rush the clothes. During those intense moments, I looked around at everyone (my error), I should have been strategizing and intensely scanning the clothes, like I noticed EVERYONE else doing. Once the men gave the go ahead, everyone there made such a dive. lmbo… You have to grab as much clothes as possible, in one scoop and step out of the way (pretty much like that old claw game in the arcade). You then quickly go through and analyze the pieces that you got in your own little corner. Rule is that you put back the things you don’t want into the original central location. Let me tell you, it was like a sporting event, with how well strategized and intensional everyone their was. Clearly, something they’ve done a time to 20 before! 😉

There was an extremely wide variety of options there. I found a couple of really great things! All for $1 each! My fav was a vibrant silk sari.

Now that I understand the process of it all, if I wanted to take on this hilarious experience again, I know I could really rack up.  When my girlfriends come to visit, this is definitely on the list of things-to-experience here in LA!

And BTW, I was SO improperly dressed for this! I was sweating bullets in my vintage floral maxi dress and sequin open back heels. That’s what happens when you stick in a sidewalk sale between church and a quick supermarket run. 🙂

THE BIG MOVE! HEY LA!

ℌ𝔦 𝔅𝔢𝔞𝔲𝔱𝔦𝔣𝔲𝔩!

I’m sitting here in front of this laptop typing a line, then deleting the line… oy! I’m so excited and trying to decide what to tell and show you first! Eeeee… Before I go one step further, if you are reading this, my sincerest thanks to you for sharing your time with me.

WELL, let me start quickly at the very beginning of this new chapter. My hubby, got a promotion, and that wonderful promotion opened up this amazing opportunity for our family to relocate. We just moved all the way across the country, from Atlanta to LA! There you have it, the impetus to this all!

This move has been so incredible, beautiful and enlightening. I’ve been documenting our time of discovering LA; the mountains, the flowers, the food, the cafes’, the fashion, the vintage, the deals, the people, the LA lifestyle and of course the family. With all of our friends and family so far away now, this will be a great way to also visually communicate the experience with everyone. As we try to settle in and navigate our way through this major change and transition in our lives, there is so much to learn and discover, which in turn becomes so much to share.

I’m a keep-it-real, good-crazy kinda lady, so I’ll also be sharing about being a mommy to teens / 2 high schoolers (insert crazy eyes) in a new city!

Well, here we go! Let the Discovering LA blogging chapter BEGIN!

Of course one of the greatly anticipated outings for the kids, prior to moving here, was going to The Santa Monica Pier. Going to see the ocean was a must and first on the list. They were both so excited about the move. My kids, especially London, are major planners and researchers. London created a Moving List, a Packing List, a Must See List and a Must Do List, all prior to us even purchasing the first moving box. LOL… 😉 Needless to say, we have quite a bit to get done, now that we’re here Discovering LA!

My hubby thought it would be a great experience to take the train/Metro from downtown LA out to the pier. After living in New York and taking the subway there, I wasn’t quite sure about what to envision or expect with the train system here. Not only was it a great experience, it was also very convenient. Finding a place to park on the streets close by can be challenging and the parking garages and lots can get expensive too. So keep the metro option in mind for when you visit or even if you already live here.

We were pleasantly surprised with how clean and bright the underground station was. I don’t know about the other stops, but this stop downtown was great. 😉 It was $1.75 each way, per person and really economical. FYI, the metro also has day passes for $7.

It was truly a beautiful day. Artists, singers and performers were everywhere. The yummy smell of seafood and churros filled the air, while all the laughter and music filled the soul. You can grab a quick bite as your stroll down the pier or if you’re in the mood for sit-down dining, there are great restaurants overlooking the water as well. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. is absolutely delicious! The seafood is finger-licking scrumptious! heehee 😉 Saw what I did there?

Fall Wardrobe Essentials

IS FALL YOUR FAVORITE SEASON FOR FASHION?

It’s never an overly exciting time for me personally, when Summer comes to a screeching halt and the temperature begins to fall. What makes it an even more challenging season FOR ME, is when the temperature imitates an unpredictable rollercoaster ride. Every year I try to force myself to find fashionable & fun Fall fashion pieces to incorporate into my wardrobe, in the attempts of not falling into a hum drum style rut. I haven’t always been successful. When it’s really cold, it’s all about survival for me! Mostly resembling a walking comforter. LOL… 😉  Over the years I’ve had my Fall and Winter go-to uniform. My uniform includes skinny jeans, boots, sweaters and huge coats. Though that combo can be amazing with great pieces, when on repeat, it can become a very boring and repetitive look. It can quickly sucks the excitement and/or motivation out of being a fashionable Fall dresser. This year I put my foot down with myself and it’s actually been fun so far. I’ve come across a couple great Fall Finds so far, and of course wanted to share. Hey, I may not be the only one struggling during the Fall and Winter months. 😉

An absolutely fantastic Fall essential, is faux leather pants or leggings. It is so versatile, comfy, warm and layerable, especially in these ever changing Fall temperatures. It can be easily dressed up or down. They can also be seamlessly paired with pumps, boots, booties, sneakers, dresses, trench coats, blazers, bomber jackets, skirts, shirts and sweaters.  Sounds like a win win to me! OH! Let me not forget to mention how AH-MAZE-BALLS they make your legs look too! Hello… will take two please. 😉

Colors and textures are great to incorporate into Fall. Not just the typical and predictable hues and textures of the season, but shake things up and go for the unexpected. Remember no rules apply here! 😉 Fur, sequin, glitter, leather, reds, cobalt blues, pinks, whites and dark wine shades are a few ideas to start with. This reversible faux fur, satin camouflage bomber jacket is so vibrant and fun. This is a piece that can be dressed up or down as well, and can be worn with just about anything and still fit in. This is definitely a staple and statement piece. Dare yourself and go for it! 😉

TIMELESS STYLE and PRICELESS MOMENTS WITH LONDON

HOW OLD ARE VINTAGE CLOTHES?

WHAT IS CONSIDERED VINTAGE CLOTHES?

Have you ever wondered about or asked any of these questions? Well, I most certainly have. If you haven’t, now you’ll learn something new, just because! heehee 😉  I personally think of great vintage pieces as, Timeless Style.  I use to think ( before asking and seriously looking into it) that clothes would have to be decades and decades old, to be labelled vintage. WELL, not so much or not so old.

Clothes that are at least 20yrs old are considered vintage. That being said, recently when I popped into a few higher end vintage stores in New York, designer pieces that are about 10 years old are now being labelled vintage too. When I saw that, I had to laugh, because my closet has a lot of things in there that are more than 10yrs old, like this dress I’m wearing here in this post! Being the vintage lover that I am, I may have way more vintage clothes in my closet than I even realized! LMBO 🙂

I know, I know! The whole “rule thing” about cleaning out your closet annually and throwing out things that you haven’t worn in a year. I don’t have, do or abide by “fashion rules”, only recommendations 😉 Though I love a good trend, I am more of a timeless dresser vs trendy. It is important to cleanse your wardrobe of the things that don’t fit anymore and things you’ll never wear again. With that in mind, my goal is to have special pieces in my closet that I can love, have and wear for a long time, hence my major love and appreciation for statement vintage clothes. 😉 I search all over for those, “MUST HAVE” pieces and I love great deals. I keep my eyes open in Thrift Stores, Goodwill, Estate Sales, Resale Stores and of course, specialized vintage store.

Shayzon Tip: Keep in mind, when you visit Vintage Stores, the pricing may be on the higher side, IF they specialize in designer vintage pieces. Specialized vintage stores know the value that these pieces have, and they price accordingly.

One thing that I am so grateful for as a mom, and cherish so much, is that my (not so) little Girly Girl London, has grown to have an appreciation for unique clothes as well! YAY! lol… I didn’t raise her to be “name brand” or a “label conscious” girl. I taught and still teach her to value fabrics, quality, style, uniqueness and price. So in those priceless moments when we’re on our mommy-daughter dates, talking and/or shopping, it’s so awesome to see that, though she is aware of the different labels out there, the things she likes and chooses for herself, isn’t dictated by a label. Her choices are dictated by wether something is worth the price, if she likes it and if it fits her personal style or not.

We had a great day in the city! Right after attending London’s first gallery show, for french illustrator Nicholle Kobi, she is amazing, check out her work. We were starving after, so we immediately went and had lunch at Fritti

Then we did what we love doing A LOT! We popped into an antique store, took some pics, (of course) 😉 and then hit the highway to hurry home. We were beat! 🙂

GOOD TIMES! 😉 xoxo

Holding On To Summer In Stripes With An Awesome Transition Bag!

The Last Weekend Of Summer in Stripes!

With all the talks about Fall, I have to keep reminding myself that it’s no over YET!

I can’t afford to miss out on the last few days of my FAVORITE SEASON, SUMMER, because I’m stressing about the cold ahead! That’s being said! 😉 I’m on a mission to wear as many of my summer loves as possible. I completely forgot about this awesome, blue and white summer stripes, off the shoulder, wide double frill sleeve, amazeballs top I bought weeks ago. That was a  mouth full!  In addition to that, A bag I fell in love with this summer on vacation in NY, went on super sale (SCORE). The long and short of that, lol, it came in the mail a few days ago and we’re hitting the streets today.

This weekend after the dreadful hurricane/storm (Irma) has been so beautiful. Last weekend was rainy, dark and scary at points and we were locked inside for days.  I definitely wanted to get out of the house and I just knew hubby and my munchkins did too. We all got dressed and decided to head to the city. Coincidentally, my mini girly girl, London and I ended up in our white distressed jeans and velvet shoes, which BTW is going to be a big hit for Fall.

Note From The Writer: This cold shoulder top is so comfortable! It actually can be worn as a dress as well, which makes it a win win. You can throw on sneakers or heels with it and either will be stunning! It’s versatile, an easy go to, super cute and comfy.

Psst… it’s perfect for a date, you can eat WHAT EVA YOU WANT! lol… 😉

So now that London has gotten so tall, most mornings she is rumbling through my closet when she’s getting dressed. I can’t believe that we’ve gotten to this place ALREADY! 😉 It feels like she was just in onesies. I love every bit of it though! Even on those days when I have to send her back to the closet because that particular piece she’s chosen, is not an “US or WE” piece. lmbo… #notforsharing  We have similar tastes in most things and very distinct differences in others, so it’s always a treat when we spend time together and when we go shopping. Getting to see her and Arlington evolve into the young lady and young man they’re becoming is so amazing. Sometimes I feel like and do cry and other times I’m busting at the seams, feeling proud and excited about their life paths.

The hilarious part of this time to the city, was seeing both Daddy and big brother Arlington sitting in those strategically placed, comfy chairs that most stores have now a days. lmbo… Even I wanted to sit down! 🙂 London is the energizer bunny! Our little daughter has always been a GIRLY GIRL and all that comes with that. Now that she’s a teenager… her taste has evolved and her love for the stores, style and fashion has been kicked up A MILLION NOTCHES! 🙂 We’re in for it!

The Prince Crew had a ball hanging out and enjoying the last weekend of Summer in the city.

Alicia Keys Graces The Cover Of Allure Magazine

Alicia Keys And Her Unapologetic Embrace With Her Natural Beauty!

During an interview with David Denicolo for Allure magazine, Alicia Keys spoke carefully and candidly about her music, motherhood, her political activism and her stand on not wearing makeup. Though for this shoot Alicia chose to wear eye makeup, you can clearly see that with or without makeup she is undeniably beautiful.

It’s a beautiful thing when a woman finds her power and that power is in her space of truth and freedom.

During her interview it was clear that she knows exactly who she is and embraces every moment of it. She confidently stated to David, “I’m not a slave to make up. I’m not a slave to not wearing makeup either. I get to choose at any given moment. That’s my right.” She later went on to say, “as an activist, I will continue to fight for what is right.” During this very transparent and empowering interview, Alicia Keys spoke more in debt on this past year in her life and what this time has truly meant to her. “This time has been more of an evolution, a process of self-realization.” Her decision to not wear makeup was not an anti-makeup move at all and it definitely wasn’t intended to be a “Radical Act.” Alicia Keys shared an important view with David, “I think makeup can be self-expression, I have no intentions to shame anyone at all who chooses to wear it. No one should be ashamed by the way you choose to express yourself. And that’s exactly the point. However, if you want to do that for yourself you should do that.”

TRACEE ELLIS ROSS IS THE GOLDEN GLOBES BEST ACTRESS WINNER!

TRACIE ELLIS ROSS IS WINNING!

Tracee Ellis Ross! You can’t help but smile when you hear her name! Her forever bright smile, beaming personality and that sparkly fierce Zuhair Murad Couture cage dress was the perfect pairing for her big night. Not to mention her grand spread of jewels that adorned all ten fingers, her striking red lip and sleek ponytail.

This is what we mean when we say Accessorize to Glamorize!

Undeniable and Deserving!

Tracee Ellis Ross is a lady, an actress, an effortless comedian, and a real fun girl friend (even if that’s just a friend in your head) lol.😄 Her ability to laugh at herself, motivate others and to make anyone laugh is matchless. Just follow her on social media, if your aren’t already and you’ll be in for quite a treat. Her role on BLACK-ISH as Dr. Rainbow, is becoming just as impacting for this current time as Clair Huxtable was on The Cosby Show some years ago. 😊

Behind The Scenes – The Making Of The New Shayzon.com Pt.1

Well here we go again!

It’s definitely important to keep things fresh and up to speed in your business as you grow. Hence the need for a new look over on shayzon.com!

I’m so blessed to have an amazing creative team that I have worked with for years. They GET ME and my crazy ideas and they always execute my vision with such excellence. I call them My Michaels. 🙂 Meet Michael-Rene (my hubby and creative partner) and Michael Reese (my photographer).

As I planned the shoot looks and the rundown for the day, my little girl London came to me and asked if I could choose her to be my assistant for this shoot. I thought it was the sweetest thing as I listened to her and as I looked over at her, I realized that she was really serious and also ready to present me with her proposal, which included her fee. lol. 🙂

When I saw how well thought out this was and how much time and thought she put into it, of course I had to say YES!  So, this was my baby girls first job, as my assistant! I have to tell you, she blew me away with how thorough and attentive she naturally was at this job! She paid attention to my hair, my clothes, my makeup and made sure that I was hydrated for the entire shoot AND she made sure everything for the shoot was neat and organized. Her work ethics are quite impressive, especially for a 12yr old.

 I’M SUCH A PROUD MAMMA!!

wp-1481224345102.jpg

wp-1481224423585.jpg

My mind doesn’t stop! I always want to know that what ever I put forth is my best. Whatever my best is at that point and time. 🙂 I had a really great time pulling my looks together to be a true reflection of myself and what CHICified represents. I checked out thrift stores and resale stores during the shopping days and I found this hot pink vintage piece in a small vintage shop in Atlanta and as soon as I saw it I knew it was the winner! I paired it with navy blue suede pumps and Viola, the cover look was born!

In my planning, I wanted to use this perfect opportunity to be the example of RESALE CHIC for the face of the website. A seamless, doable and stunning mix of vintage and labels. I didn’t have to break the bank on clothes for this shoot at all.

This dress was less than $60! YAY!

Now that’s what I’m talking about! 😉

** Tip: Always check the details, construction and hardware on everything when you’re buying any type of resale garments.**

Funny story about these sexy pumps coming up soon on the blog!

Note From The Editor:

It’s important to plan the details for a shoot, down to the time on each look and/or location ahead of time. This is definitely a situation where the saying “Time is Money” truly applies. As the shoot goes along, of course it’s important to go with the flow and energy that’s happening. Some of the unexpected shots can turn out to be the winning shot, trust me!

Reminder: Plan your budget, make a run of day schedule, don’t loose track of time, everyone is on the clock including you. 🙂  Otherwise you’ll blow your budget with overtime costs and who wants that at the end of an amazing shoot. 🙂

THE SHOE THAT GOT AWAY!

A Reality To RESALE SHOPPING!

Keeping it real on being RESALE CHIC:

The joy I felt as I darted towards these GORGEOUS RED SHOES!  I spotted them in the back of the resale store, in the shoe section and it was immediately ELECTRIFYING!! With every step towards them, I hoped that it would be my size. As I got a few steps away, I LITERALLY started praying for them to be my size! How crazy! 🙂

These brand new, red, unique, vibrant, platform sandals from Alice and Olivia sat pretty on the shelf, waiting to be bought by a shoe lover. I so hoped that shoe lover was me, but unfortunately as I tried to FORCE my foot into these size EIGHT beauties, knowing darn well that my feet are a size NINE! The horrible reality set in, I WASN’T the soon to be owner of these red hot beauties! 🙁

As wonderful as resale, vintage and thrift shopping is, this is a reality that goes along with the process and boy does it sting like a bee sometimes! There are those times when you can easily walk away from a Diamond Find and never think of it again, then there are other times when the piece that got away, literally plays over and over in your mind for days. Well, what should I do, you ask?? Just ride it out! lol…  Eventually the feeling of regret or missing out will pass, trust me! I went home and looked them up online and they popped up for about $150. In the resale store, it was an amazing deal for less than $50. It was just one of those days in RESALE CHIC Land BUT I’m NO QUITER!! lol…

Well Honey Bunnies, ONWARD AND UPWARD WE GO! The hunt continues!

muah 🙂

LAUNCH OF THE CHICified girl INITIATIVE IN JAMAICA

CHICified GIRL

The CHICified girl Initiative Is A Sisterhood & A Movement!

CHICified girl Initiative

The CHICified girl Initiative was birthed from my heart. The motivation and empowerment of girls, young and old is imperative.

Who are you CHICified girl?  I am confident and driven by my dreams. I succeed because I am strong, determined, and full of heart.

CHICified girl Initiative

I migrated to the states from Jamaica when I was nine years old. (Not that long ago! lol…) 🙂 I had no idea that the CHICified girl Initiative was a part of my destiny. I remember very vividly, the feeling of amazement and the long drive from the airport. I looked out the window at the many lanes and roads going over our heads and wondered how in the world would I ever learn my way around in this HUGE place. I felt like a little ant! 🙂

CHICified girl Initiative

As time went on, I became so excited with all that I was seeing. I couldn’t wait to go back to Jamaica to share with all my friends about my experience and to tell them about this place that was made for giants. Well, my family and I made a life here in the states and I never lost my desire of wanting to go back and share all the exciting stories. My stories evolved over the years, into major experiences and life lessons. I developed a sense of urgency and obligation to share those lessons and to give back. Empowering girls and ladies with positive tools along with how I maneuvered the challenging paths I faced from youth to adulthood.

CHICified girl Initiative

I am so excited to say that a couple of weeks ago, I had the honor of accomplishing my dream!! Right back at home in Jamaica, where it all started for me. Launching The CHICified girl Initiative at Liberty Academy At The Priory with the same age group of girls that reflected the time in my life when I migrated, meant the world to me. CHICified girl is a sisterhood and a movement that will positively infect the world.

CHICified girl Initiative

Though we are in the early phase, I believe that the sky is the limit. Teaching little girls, teens, young adults and young ladies to value themselves highly, believe in their dreams, to set high goals, to be kind and honorable beings, to be positive and determined, to own their bodies and beauty and to care and uplift each other, not just in words but through actions, are lessons that can never be over taught and characteristics that will never fail them.

CHICified girl Initiative

I learned so much from the girls. The experience had made me even more determined to go forward. The heart of a little girl is so precious and impressionable and should be treated that way. Dreams do come true and I want them to know that and believe that.
